Robie House Visitors Center

The prompt for this project was to design a visitors center for a historic home. It was to include a gift shop, theater, exhibition space, library, event space, bathrooms, and an office. We were required to take design cues from the  historic home. The three principles applied in the design are symmetry around a central feature, perception of levels and using the building planes to mimic the land.

The Robie house in Chicago was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Prarie Style. It is considered on of his seminal works in the style. The house was designed for Frederick C. Robie though he only lived in it for 14 months. The house continued to change hands until 1997 when it was restored to it’s 1910 layout and turned into a house museum.
